Utah trip

we spent the final week of Christmas break in utah visiting my sister and her family.
it was awesomely fun. we all had a great time.

we rented a minivan (awesome!) and left at like 3 am.
two days of driving later in snow and wind, we got there.

we were soooo lucky there was snow. the boys immediately got into their snow stuff and
went outside. who can blame them? they'd been sitting for two days straight!
and us houstonions don't get to see real snow that often! or our cousins!

we took the boys skiing at brighton one day. their first time! it was.....interesting.
one big problem - it was -14. that is just cold. i don't think there was a way to get warm.
so the boys weren't too happy with that. the other thing was, it was much harder to wrangle
them and their skiis and boots and our own than we thought.
it was a fun time though, and beautiful. and a good experience.

grant started out not too happy. turns out his boots weren't really on right. we fixed that
at lunch, but in the morning there were a lot of tears. but he did try to go down
the mountain a few times. chase did awesome in the morning. he was fresh
and happy and had a bunch of great runs down the mountain.
gotta love that little kid no fear.

jason created these "reins" - clips and ropes that hooked on their boots so they didn't
go too fast. it was actually really fun to ski behind them and help them not go to fast.
i felt like i was driving a pony or a dog sled! i was terrified of taking
them up the lifts and we fell quite a lot. but they were great sports.
and eventually it got better the more we practiced.

chase was just happy with the deep snow.

getting warm at lunch and eating helped things greatly for grant. chase was worn out.

round two after lunch. turns out chase was beat, so after about one run we went
into the lodge and found aunt susan. grant got a second wind and had a
blast going down bigger hills and going faster with jason.

chase fell asleep in this chair after lunch. he woke up pretty stiff and crabby.
i had to carry him down 6 flights of stairs and to the car in my boots and with his
boots and gear. i was beat the next day, and bruised.
maybe he needs to be a bit older next time.....

temple square! we found out last minute that the last night for the lights was new years
eve, so we quickly went in the FREEZING cold as to not miss it. we were hoping to go later
in the week when it warmed up, but so much for that. we still had a great time.
chase and i love Christmas lights, and he was so thrilled to see them at temple square.
it was cold though. like 5 degrees. the coldest i've been in a long time.
utah had some freak storm where the high was in the single digits
for a few days, with 50 mph winds. it was crazy.

so beautiful! this was the only thing i really wanted to do so i'm glad i saw them.

the allarts!

the cold weather made it prime conditions for sticking your tongue on a pole
like the kid in "a christmas story." chase actually stuck it on the swing set one morning.
ouch! good things tongues heal fast and it didn't bother him too much.

more sledding! the boys spent so much time sledding. they loved it. it was awesome.
especially toward the end of the week when it warmed up to normal snow temperatures.

we had a great time seeing family and the snow. we wish we could be there longer.
happy new year!!!
