Karen's Belated B-day presents

Over a decade of marriage and Karen asked that I make her some legitimate bed side tables for her birthday (vs. the make shift ones we've had over the years including boxes filled with books for stability, my dad's old speakers, file cabinets, etc.).

She measured the bed (which sits higher than most beds), looked at styles and sizes she liked in pottery barn. Here are a couple that inspired the ones I made:

Based on these, Karen asked that I make something 30 inches tall, 20 inches deep, and 24 inches wide. Unliked these ones, she didn't like the idea of seeing all of the junk in the bottom--she wanted it to be closed. She also didn't like the baseboard being raised at the bottom. She wanted them to be flush with the floor so dust and toys can't get trapped in "under-furniture limbo."

Done, done, and DONE. This is all birch plywood and poplar. The bottoms are fully supported (you could throw 200 lbs of lead in the bottom cabinet and they'd be fine). The backs are 1/2 inch birth ply as opposed to the crappy 1/4 inch standard you get at places like pottery barn, restoration hardware, etc. I mean, really--if you're going to make something well, don't skimp on the last part(s). The drawer is deeper than most--a FULL 6 inches. I cant even fill it (I ran out of stuff to put in there; I'm sure I'll find more stuff over time). Two coats of paint--sanded in between and they're some pretty smooth surfaces which I like to run my fingers along.

Karen wanted glass knobs and these ones we picked up from Rockler are freaking AWEsome on the black. I LOVE them. LOVE.

I'm also happy to report no fingers were cut during this project. ; )

Happy birthday, babe.

Rodeo Parade 2011

Here we are at the Rodeo Parade! Let the month of fun . . . BEGIN!

The drums are by FAR my most favorite part of the whole parade (or any parade for that matter)
There's a pecking order in the parade line-up. Here we have the cadets who obeyed their commands and as a reward, got to ride on horses during the parade.
These guys--not so lucky. They're cleaning up after their friends up front.
I love seeing the horses, but who cares about skinny arabian horses? Show me a horse with some MUSCLE and STATURE!!!! I could look at big, strong horses all day long.

OK--so this pipsqueak wasn't that strong, but he's funny to watch hauling that person along with all of his might.
OK--first let me tell you that i HATE pictures that only have one color in them like this. however, my camera was on scene and it did this (stupid thing). i really liked the dressage on this horse.
And this one, while not that big, had some peculiar markings.

Ski Trip

Another great Winter vacation get away
Here's Justin--by far the coolest cat to ever proselyte in H-town
Michelle and Karen enjoying their time with a stranger on the lift
This is Karen at some point of every ski day. She cracks me up.
In all honest, Justin, Karen, and I went skiing the enTIRE day before (woke up at 6:30 and were on the road by 7 AM, got there 45 minutes before they opened, and skied hard and fast ALL day until about 3 PM). Needless to say, on day two (these pictures) we were tired around lunch time
What a trip. Thanks for letting us bum around your parent's house, Aaron and Michelle. And thanks to Justin for making it out again.
